Seedling from a legend!

Post by Admin on 5th November 2010, 21:26

I was lucky enough earlier this year to receive some seed from the U.S. of OP 0-47-19 from Paul Barden, via Don Holeman. Anyone into rose history would recognise 0-47-19 as being Mr Moore's famous breeder used to start his mini-empire by crossing Rosa wichurana with 'Floradora'. This little seedling has just flowered here at only a few weeks old. 0-47-19 is a once flowering rose carrying remontancy genes so it makes sense that there should be at leasy some remotanmt seedlings among the progeny.

I have about 20 of these seedlings and this is the only remontant one so far. My hope is that this little rose is going to go on to become an important breeder, in much the same way as it did for Mr Moore. It's siblings are pretty ordinary in terms if mildew resistance, however, this one seems to be unaffected. I'm hoping to put this with Teas like M. Tillier to develop wichurana-tea hybrid shrubs.
