Rose Talk Auctions

Post by Simon on 13th October 2010, 10:57 pm

I'm at it again Rolling Eyes

I've been playing with a new script whereby I can make my own auction site specific for Rose Talk. The idea behind it is that members and even shops can list rosey items for sale via auction. It's free to register (note that your Rose Talk membership does not work there. You need to register for it separately), free to use, and free to sell. I'd like to think that up-and-coming rose nurseries might like to use it to help them get established. I also see it as somewhere smaller breeders can distribute their newly registered roses to help offset the cost of producing them. Of course all the regular forum rules apply there... especially those relating ot the sale of PBR protected plants and trademarks etc.

You can see it here: Rose Talk Auctions or you can click on the new link I made for it in the forum menu at the top right of the screen.

I can't customise it much beyond what you see now but I think it works pretty well. It's NOT Ebay. You need to line up the payment of items yourself. I recommend using direct deposit or requesting payment with your existing PayPal account. I've listed a demo one of a whole boat load of 'Dorothy Perkins' plants that I have to make sure it all works. So far it looks to be working pretty well. You can include images as well using photobucket or your servimg account here if you know the url.

I'm going to spread the word around to the smaller rose nurseries to invite them to use it as well and with any luck we might be able to support the specialist rose nurseries in Australia a bit more. So tell your friends about it and start using it. You never know what you might find there Smile

Interesting idea, Simon. Could be good. (How do you find the time?) Having had a look, one hazard I see is that one buys a pig in a poke in the form of postage. You have to commit to the sale before you have any idea what the seller will hit you for, for postage and handling.

yeah... I wish I could add postage requirements. I'm trying to get a few minutes together to do policy doc for it to state that postage needs to be included in the listing description. In the mean time you can contact the seller to find out how much the postage will be before bidding on it.

I suggest going with Trewallyn prices which includes postage and packing.

ie Postage and packing 1 to 3 plants $20 to NSW.

Posting and packing will be up to the seller to determine.

Excuse me for being dumb. Why do we have to have auctions. Why not list the roses and pay the postage and some compensation for the plant to the raiser, only my thoughts.

Yeah... though that too... am actually thinking of getting rid of the classifieds section and only having the auction site (you can buy it now with it too)... was thinking of taking all that side of things off the forum completely Smile

Also perhaps if the vendor won't send plants to W.A or Tas. that they include it in the heading of the ad, eg ;
" Dorothy Perkins rooted cuttings . [Not for W.A or Tas.]"
That way one can tell right at the start which ads to read and which ones not to bother wasting time on .

It's one of my pet peeves on ebay and other places. Smile

cheers. Rosalie
