Plant those terrible looking HT's around the back of the shed where no one can see them and bring in the blooms for vasing. Surprising how well they look as an arrangement with greenery from other plants are used.

Hi,
I'm looking very carefully at Raubritter. She's crowding out General Gallieni and I prefer the latter.

IMO Cheryl you should know better with the standards as they take longer to grow than bush roses, you won't get a lot of growth because of the food chain.

Well in Europe I've seen everything pruned back to the knuckles. I do sometimes - not every year though. Feed them well in early spring and they should look fabulous.

My standard seen in the 5th pic to the rhs near the green veranda pole , it reached the guttering by the end of the season, canes over a metre log, that is my DA Golden Celebration.

This pic was taken 27/10/2009 , first flush

Perhaps you may try Granada, DD's parent. It's a very fine older HT rose, and has a better overall bush quality, better foliage too. DD's fragrance is intense, but apart from that and a bit unusual colour combo, Granada is a much better plant and it also has a very nice fruity scent. Between the two, I'd always choose Granada.

Having stated the above, I cannot ignore 'Margaret Merril' any longer & she has to go. I cannot grow this rose well no matter how hard I try

What's wrong with your Margaret Merril? She can be picky but still many people love it ...

G'day Ozrosarian! Smile

I grow both 'DD' & 'Granada' here and 'DD' does far better & TBH is more to my liking! I guess it just comes down to where we live & what we like!?!

'MM' got awful BS in Sydney & has no vigor where I am now so it can be replaced with something better! I have tried a number of plants of it but I guess it is just not a rose for me sadly!!! She is very pretty...which is why I have tried so hard with her!

Hi Karen (Wave) , I would love to visit you oneday & you are more than welcome to visit me if you ever get a chance?
