Simon
Unfortunately there are only 24 hours in a day.
The stands are about 6 foot high. I don't have them anchored down as the roses tend to keep them in place. I did have to tie one down in the storms. We have a Mme Alfred Carriere spreading out from one. We have never had a lot of success with that rose but this one seems to want to defy all before it. It tiped over but did not hurt the rose. At present I have a surveyors peg driven in and the structure tied to it with a bit of bailing twine.
Unfortunately this has worked to well and that is still how it sits after about 4 months or so. If it dd not work I prebably would have fixed it properly but it is sort of out of sight out of mind.
I actually made 8 (not 10) of them in a weekend. I made one the week before to work out how to make them (you can just see it in the background on the left hand side of the photo) and started a production line with mass cutting of the timber. Hardest part is getting the angles worked out. All was one more or less straight out of my head with the help of my computer to work out the angles for the cuts.
Also my cutting of the timber from sleepers is not the best idea as the timber tends to twist a bit. If you can buy the timber the correct size it would make it easier as you do not have to fight the twisting timber as much when screwing it all together.
The stand shown has a Ciceily Lascelles (sitting amoungst a big circle of Comtesse de Larbarthe) on it. We have three of these around the garden, two have Marie Nabonands on them, two have Mme Alfred Carriere (one growing beserk and the other not so), one has an Mme Ernst Calvert and the other Mme Pierre Olger (I think) but I think it is going to go as it has not done anything (once again not cold enough for it). Looking back the selection of roses for the stands probably were not the best and could be changed this winter.
Gary
PS Thanks I was not sure how I could have rotated it.

Re: Balinbear Sunshine Coast
Thanks Gary... I'll knock up some plans for one myself as well? What do you use to make the plans? I have found Google Sketch-Up to be the best thing EVER for these kinds of things and make plans for everythng with it. With it, you can work out everything from dimensions to cutting angles.
Re: Balinbear Sunshine Coast
I'm a surveyor (having a day off to make up for night work I did late last week) so I have access to Autocad etc which I use all the time.
Its good fun working these things out and building them. I picture the thing in my head and just start work and it seems to come togehter in the end.
I have not worked out what I am doing for easter this year. I am fixing up part of the shed behind the house for my son to move into. He has oputgrown his bedroom in the house so I will probaly do some work on that. If the rain has stopped by then I may start to repair the damage in the garden.
Oh yeah the big news is that after reading the posts about growing roses from seeds I planted my first seeds yesterday. They germinated in the fridge after about 4 weeks. The seeds are from hips taken from Mme De Tartas (possibly crossed with Comtesse de Larbarthe as the plant is surrounded by them) and also from a Peace 1902 so it will be interesting to see how they go.
I also have some Rev de Or, Mme de Leoinie Vernott and Heritage that I picked yesterday after discovering my success with the others. All have been self polinated so not sure how they will go.

WOAH!!! That IS awesome news!!! Didn't even know you were interested in that kind of thing. Will be looking forward to seeing the seedlings over the coming months.

I have never tried growing from seed before. I may try doing my own crosses in spring.
I will keep you up to date with their growth. With the luck I have had with cuttings this year (not good weather for them) I hope they survive.

Balinbear, your garden and structures look really wonderful. I hope I can get a Mrs B R Cant to grow like yours.
The photo of Ah Mow looks good. I will have to re get one of these, the one Larry sent me ended up dying.

Karean
We got 2 last year. One from Deb Kelly (Cree) and one from Bishops Lodge.
The one from BL only lasted about 3 weeks and passed away. All the rest of their roses have grown well but I have heard that it is a hard rose to grow.
The one from Deb is growing well. No as fast as most teas do in our area.
Speaking of Deb has anyone heard from her of late?
