Balinbear Sunshine Coast

Post by Balinbear on Sun 31 Jan - 19:34

Hi all

A bit of a gallery of the roses we grow can be seen at

http://picasaweb.google.com/MooloolahRoses/OldGardenRoses#

The galley has not been updated for the last 12 months as I have been a bit slack with phots plus I can't remeber my username of pasword but I am working on it.

As usual we are constntlay changing the garden and unfortunately we live on acerage so we have room to expand though maintneance is getting to be a bit of a problem.

Anyway I hope to update some of the photso in the near future.

Yes, I understand about looks ... but I am sure you would not rouse on him for too long even if he is such a tornado.

BTW I'm not good with 'handles' - have we 'met' in the past?

Rita

I am not sure if we have met in the past or not. I don't recognise your name or where you live.

As far as Zephyr goes he is now 18 months old and has matured a bit. He is still a great excavator but he is restricted to a bit of a garden that he and his mum and dad share behind the house.

He is a bit of a bugger when it comes t his mother. We can't play with the three of them at once because he and his mum want to fight all the time. At meal times its him and his dad. Maybe its time he moved out of home and found his own place (just kidding).

Balinbear, you might have met on the other forum, "RE" If you were to place your old user name Rita would remember that as I do.

Hey BB, It's great to see roses around the country!

My 'Buff Beauty' doesn't do at all as well as yours seems to be. I don't know whether it's because it's new in the ground or whether it is because the chooks keep giving it a hammering (I have given my goats away now so no excuses there :roll), but it just never seems to flower and when it does, on those rare occassions, it's flowers are pretty ordinary. For some reason the hybrid musks don't seem to take very well here... maybe I just need to give them more time to show their true colours.

'Albertine' is SUCH a beautiful rose. Every local example I have seen spot like crazy but I still want to make some room for it here one day and see how it goes once it gets up of the ground a bit (a bit like 'Climbing Cecile Bruner'. As a small plant it spots like crazy here but once it gets some height and up off the ground a bit it grows cleanly with no-spraying). Your 'Albertine' flowers are just the most beautiful!

Would love to walk around your garden... all those Teas look just perfect! Could I ask a favour? Could you take a full length photograph of those blue rose pillars you have (such as in here: http://picasaweb.google.com/MooloolahRoses/OldGardenRoses#5281276732987056530)? I'd like to have a go at building some for around here. Did you make the arches too? They look like a great idea!

Simon
The walk may have to wait for a while. Our place is a mess from all the rain. Whilst the roses have hung on, a lot of the other plants have not done so well. I am hoping the rain will give us a good spring this year.

A lot of our garden is new. We have renovated a fair bit of it in the last couple of years and are still going. We have about 2 acres of garden. The pictures of the flowers probably make the garden look better than it is but we are working on it.

A few of the structure around the garden are shown below. I have built all of them my self with the exception of the arches made of pipe. I have a plumber make up the arch and I put it up.

The blue stands I made from sleepers. I slice them up into strips the size I want. If you can get the timber it is easier. I made 10 one weekend. The knobs on top I bought from Bunnings but most decent sized hardware stores should have them.

This Shelter was a Christams present for Lee (my wife). Most of the stuctures were presents for her though she probably won't admit it.

This pergola now has a climbing White Maman Cochet growing over it.

This pergola was my first effort. I built it one Easter (for Lee of course) back about 1994. It originally had an Albertine growing all over it but we pulled it out because it only flowered once and we thought that we wanted something that flowered more often so we planted a Mrs BR Cant on it. It was beautiful (as you can see) but borers got into the plants (they love Mrs Cant for some reason and leave all the otehr roses alone). One has died and the oterh is going very soon and guess what, we are replacing them with Albertine.

This is a simple Arch with Mrs BR Cant. These rose blew down in a storm a few months back but I think that we have saved them.

The dove house (though we no longer have any doves living in there (You can than Zephyr's dad for that) was Lee's 40th birthday present. It was damaged before Christmas when a bunya nut fell on it. Its on the list for repairs.

Excellent! Those pillars/obelisks look perfect for around here... another job to go on the list for the coming Easter break Smile For my wife, Alicia, of course Wink Actually, I do the same as you do and build Alicia structures as presents... now I wish she'd slow down a bit so she can enjoy them Rolling Eyes

I know what you mean about a work-in-progress. The rose section of our gardens here are about an acre in size. The other few acres are native gardens and pasture that I'm trying to reforest. I often dispair at the lack of 'polish' the place has because between work and the million-and-one other things I do there seems very little time left over for the garden. BUt the roses seem mostly happy (and the ones that aren't get turfed after about three years) and if I keep chipping away slowly I'll get there eventually Smile

Those pillars/obelisks look to be around 6-7ft tall right? Do you anchor them down with anything or just rely on the wide base for stability and the rose to anchor it?

P.S. Hope you don't mind I grabbed that image in your post and turned it around for you Smile
