Two of the exotics with an interesting backgrounds are Melinda Gainsford and City of Newcastle. The Melinda Gainsford rose is in actual fact Ann Morrow Lindbergh which is a parent of the Keith Zary roses Gemini and Diana Princess of Wales. City of Newcastle is Veterans Honour which rates 2 on the 2012 list of USA exhibition roses.

It is my belief that names of roses should not be changed. I have Melinda and it was a good rose, by that I mean if I treated it right it would become a very nice rose again, it is in a part of the yard which is neglected.

I whole heartedly agree as do the majority of rosarians who are members of a rose society however it is up to the introducers and they are guided by commercial considerations.

Eventually this will be registered and make their way onto the Australian market along side such outstanding Chapman roses as Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne Town, Dame Nellie Melba, Joyce Abounding, Amazing Grace and Red Gem.

Warren, you have done well, they have missed a lot of Aussie breeders.

When do you fly out, and don't forget to give Isobelle my regards.

By the way David you and I are not on the list, don't they count seedlings given away to friends.

Those in blue mean the name is linked to a website relating to the name. Just click on the blue name and it will link you to a related website. For instance click on Alister Clark and it takes you to Alister Clark Wikipedia. If you click on Warren Millington it doesn't go anywhere as it isn't linked to a website.

The Bruce Chapman floribunda Flemington Racecourse won the Grand Champion Award at the Macarthur Regional Rose Show on Saturday. In a strong field the unit won Champion Floribunda, Champion Australian Bred and Grand Champion. This is the third Grand Champion Award for this magnificent floribunda and shows once again some Ausroses are more than competitive on the show bench.

Re: List of ALL Australian bred roses on HMF

Over the weekend the my wife and I had the pleasure of attending the inaugural Dr Allan Campbell Memorrial Lecture held in the Barossa Valley at the Barossa Chateau, Lyndoch Hill Estate, Lyndoch. The weekend was organised by the South Australian Rose Society. Legendary American rose breeder Tom Carruth ( Moonstone, Neptune, Marilyn Monroe, Ebb Tide, Chihuly etc) was the keynote speaker for the weekend and as part of the weekend a new Australian bred rose named "That's Life" dedicated to the memory of Dr Allan Campbell was launched.
Bred by South Australian Wendy Maher "That's Life" is like our ever-changing life. As the flowers develop, they transform from yellow to peach in the opening bud, through to apricot and pink when fully opened.
The mildly fragrant flowers are carried singly or in small clusters on sturdy stems, ideal for creating a beautiful display in floral arrangements.
Typical of many floribunda roses, it is quick to repeat flower throughout the season.
It is also reasonably pest and disease resistant with tough, glossy, pale green foliage rapidly evolving from strong, bronze new growth.
Whilst the individual plant can grow relatively large (1.4m to 1.8m in height and 1.4m to 1.8m spread), it can be kept more compact with regular trimming and removal of spent blooms.
That’s Life was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the National Rose Trial Garden of Australia.
That's Life is available to purchase from Knight's Roses: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Doug, any idea of the parentage ? As full as it is, how does it or would it go in wet weather if we ever get any ?

Just to sidetrack for a minute, how was Tom Carruth( I have a small interest in some of his breeding.) as the keynote speaker and what did he speak on. I don't suppose there are any recordings of it.

During the talk one parent was mentioned and I was led to believe the other one was unknown. I will make enquiries and see if I can come up with the answers you seek with respect to the rose.

In time I will be able to write up the rose as Glynis and I were presented with one by the Rose Society of SA for our work promoting Australian Bred Roses.

With respect to Tom Carruth's talk I am pretty sure it wasn't recorded. From the ordinary garden variety rosarian's point of view Tom's talk was very informative however he didn't go into specific breeding details very much if at all.

Tom was in Mary & Ian Fricks (Mary is the NRSA Secretary)garden at Tanunda South Australia on the Monday after the Dr Allan Campbell Memorial Lecture weekend had finished. As you have pointed out he has moved from Weekes Roses to Huntington Gardens and no longer hybridizes roses however he did tell me he will have roses he has already hybridized coming out for another 8 yrs. At one stage I asked him if he had a favourite rose of those he had bred he told me rather than a particular rose he had a favourite colour. And that is ?

Recently the African Queen and I had the pleasure of visiting Bruce Treloar's nursery to pick up a couple of plants of the Australian bred rose Pink Angel (Parkes) that he had budded for us. We were delighted to meet Bruce and have a chat. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
