I was talking to Maureen Ross of Ross Roses today and she informed me she will have a good supply of the miniflora Joyce Abounding (Chapman) for the coming season and a limited supply of the miniature Red Gem (Chapman).

Hi Bonita/John

Information will be sent out hopefully during the week. With respect to WA access to 100 Not Out it is being looked at however as you would be aware it is complicated and expensive to send roses to WA from the Eastern States. There is also the problem of rootstock as 100 Not Out isn't on fortuniana.

I have sent roses to WA grafted on Multiflora. They did report excellent growth though this may not be the case over long periods in WA soil. However they should be able to graft budwood or take cuttings from the roses once established over there.

Hi Bruce

That is a solution however the costs are fairly high according to what I have been led to believe due to having to go through quarantine.

Doug, I'm not 100% sure I will be sending roses to WA this winter but it's probably about time a pooling system was set up for sending roses in to WA in winter via Quarrantine in Sydney. One shipment, one certificate sent to someone like John to post from him to others in WA.

The border is open now roses go through a three type pestercide dip plus others for fungus ( Particularly Myrtle Rust ) This has been described as hard on the plants though no reports of fatalities. The situation could change at any moment. I have had experience sending live bee nuc's which is a real no no. Roses may be next for they have a very active department regulating what comes in.

On Australian bred roses in WA I noticed yesterday that the Swiss Garden Nursery have Governor Macquarie for sale for the coming season. If you haven't got it John I suggest you seriously think about adding it to your list of exhibition blooms. I spoke to Swiss Nursery last week and 100 Not Out maybe a possibility down the track.

Bruce I think your idea on a bulk send is a good one.

I recently gave a talk to the Gold Coast Rose Society on Australia bred roses and Queensland breeder Paul Haines showed off a number of his new mini-floras. Paul puts a lot of time and effort into his breeding program and is now starting to show the benefits. I do have an e-booklet I prepared for the talk that gives a basic history of the development or Australian bred roses as well as other information. Anyone wanting a copy that is free should email a request to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] and one will be sent to you. John (Neptune) if my memory is correct I did send you a copy if not just let me know.

At this stage the roses are unregistered seedlings. I was interested in the yellow one you indicated however Paul told me it was from a very poor bush that lacked vigour and he doubted it would survive a cull. I'm pretty well sure he said he would give a chance as a budded rose and see what happens. The larger pink rose in the centre is being trialled by one of the leading nurseries.

You are certainly right there Bruce. I am predicting Paul Haines will be the next Bruce Chapman. Just complete the trilogy I had a polo pony called Bruce when I was a teenager.

Does anyone know if the Peter Brock rose is Australian bred rose or is it an exotic rose with an an iconic Australian name for marketing purposes?

Neptune a little humour goes a long way. Love it.

Oh Neptune, you've gone off the track, lol.
As much as I can find out it's a special cause rose by knight's rose for PB foundation. I did read that they picked amongst their own for the cause, but don't quote me on it. Saw it at a nursery a while back, and talking about Australian roses reminded me. Looks nice.
