Entally House Tasmania

Post by Billndee on 30th November 2009, 12:09 pm

This old (by Australian standards) farm property near Launceston is maintained by volunteers for the public to enjoy. The house has a lot of old furniture in it, the sheds have a lot of old equipment and the garden has a lot of old roses in it.
I have never seen so many delphiniums before or such large ones. The day was windy and they were blown about somewhat but they still made a big show.
Nepeta makes a beautiful border.
Generally I was disappointed in the Tea roses at Entally and at Woolmers. They are struggling to grow.

Lovely photos, Dee. I agree with you about the Nepeta, it's a very attractive edge. Wow what delphiniums! (The roses are good too!)

Looks like you had a great weekend Dee Smile Great photos... Entally House is really lovely isn't it? You say you were disappointed with the Teas... don't suppose you can recall which ones looked to be struggling can you?

Two I remember because I have them newly planted in mty garden. Duchess de Brabant and Maman Cochet were under .3M and sick looking. There were a few others but I can't recall their names.
Maybe the size could be excused if they are newly planted but the yellow leaves and defoliation can't.

Were they grafted plants Dee or own root? My own-root Duchesse de Brabanat (Comtesse de Labarthe) is also very slow and looking poorly. 'Safrano', however, is grafted and is growing strongly. My 'Lady Hillingdon' is a small cutting too and is not overly fast but my little Mon's Tiller cutting has shot up 20cm of new growth in the last few weeks and seems to be a doer here.

What an enchanting garden - one day I WILL make it down to Tassie - I wish my delps grew so large - still they are still in bloom in spite of the heat and humidity that Sydney has thrown at them.

Sorry Simon, I have only now seen this post.
And I am sorry I can tell you no more because I didn't look to see if there was a graft union.
Instructions for the next person visiting Entally House:
Have a close look at the tea roses.
Record the names od all of them and rate the health of each one 1 to 10.
Look for a graft union.
