Alee... how are your seeds going?

Post by Admin on 17th October 2009, 23:26

I was thinking this morning, Alee, that those seeds of yours should be starting to germinate for you about now? Have any started popping up? Don't forget to check them in the fridge because they will germinate in the there and their roots will grow all through the paper towel and be a pain to try and extricate Rolling Eyes

I'm checking on it. It is going to be seven weeks now. No sign of germination yet. I didn't use paper towel. I have the seeds in perlite in a zip lock bag.

No sign of germination. I suspect it is the temperature. I'm going to buy a thermometer and check the temperature of the fridge. I think it is too warm there.

Alee, why not just plant the lot out in some mix now with your warmth and some mist(water). I think they ( might ) germinate.

I second this idea... after 6 weeks I had only one germination in the fridge. Two weeks later, after sowing all the seeds, I had 70-80% germination.

I can also second this, but be aware not to increase the temp too fast, sometimes it's better to go slowly Laughing , germination will stop at about 28C, 80F !

let it grow

Bemo, i have an old fridge in my shed that i was going to use for this purpose. How would it be if i increased the temperature of the fridge slowly over a few days so the temperature doesn't increase too fast ?? I haven't tried germinating any seeds yet but i'm very interested to give it a go.

did not (yet) test it but I'm sure that my amber.. will also become warm.

As they need also light for growing, I put them on a bright but not sunny window, first at about 17-20 C, usually found in the upper lea of our house in February.

Maybe hard to realize at your location but not impossible as I assume that your rooms are air conditioned

Yes Bemo, our house is mostly air conditioned but we haven't been using it much so far this season but i'm sure it won't be long. I'm really looking forward to trying to grow some seeds and i'm really interested in the ideas you guys are giving here. I'm sure i can find somewhere in the house that matches your criteria.

Alee.... please tell me you have seedlings now Shocked I won't have any multiflora seeds this season as I've cut them all back really hard after flowering so I hope these work for you. My multiflora seedlings from the same batch are pushing 50cm tall already.

Simon, I have sowed the seeds this morning after reading the post. I have been busy since November. I am trying to open a small general store. This is my first step in business.

Hi Alee. If you open up a store, you'll have room out the back to grow your roses !!!

It has not germinated yet and I doubt it will. I blame my fridge. I think the temperature is too high.

Hey Alee,

I take it none of those multiflora seeds came up? It's still about 3-4months before it will flower again, but would you like me to collect more seed for you to try again?

Simon, none of the seeds germinated. If it is not too much trouble for you, I would like to try again.

It was very interesing to read about the swamp rose. I was thinking of using it as a rootstock, but it becoming a potential weed has stopped me. I agree with what you have said about it becoming a weed.

I have been quite these days as I have been busy working on opening a small corner shop. And my roses have been neglected. After opening the corner shop, I am planing to shift my roses to a roof top and to use shade cloth(netting) to cover them.

Alee, I will allow a whole bunch of multiflora flowers to develop OP hips this year. It will be quite a while before they are ready but I will let you know. I will send a much larger number this time.
