Cemetery Roses

Wedge, I was going to suggest you visit Rookwood Cemetry if you had enough time while you are staying with your friend. Now I am definitely suggesting you go. I will post some photos here of what I saw the other day. It took a few cemetrys before I found a rose.
Everyone, last Friday I was very excited when I found my third rose which is planted on the grave of a Reverend that died in 1895. The rose is completely thornless and the canes are slender but it is very healthy and attractive looking. It is quite shady in the area. A red colour was peeking through one of the buds. I can't wait to see it's bloom. Here are some photos of it.

Hi Bemo ! There should be some blooms to photograph soon. There was also this rambler at another cemetry



Also another rambler or two at yet another. And a very thorny ugly one that was lucky to have survived in a very crowded cemetry and might have been sprayred with poison in the past. I didn't get photos of these but will keep my eye on them.

I don't know what the 3rd and 2nd last rose is, but I have a bit of a idea what the others are. The smaller bush of cream and pink roses might be the same as the cream buds I took early on a much bigger bush. But nearly all its blooms were marked, which was a shame as it is a beautiful rose. Then again the smaller bush one had unsploilt blooms so maybe it is a different rose.
I will have to see about going on the rose tour of the cemetry. Then next year going earlier too to catch the roses blooms in their prime.

Simon, I should have put this post on the Heritage rose forum. Would it be too hard to move it there ?

No cuttings Bemo, I was warned you weren't allowed to take cuttings from Rookwood. Anywayy I have enogh new grafted roses to look after. The other roses I have been looking at in the little cemetries I will take a little budwood if there roses are very pretty and Bruce is going to bud them for me. I saw them again today and the the buds ard starting to look very pretty light pink and a darker pink. The man that lives in the house next to one of the cementries said that the rose has been there for forty years, as long as he has, and that is a little pink rose. The first rose I showed up above, and has a light pink bud now and even now has a fragrance.

Great pics Karen! Rookwood is another rosey place I have to see - preferably before I die lol. The heritage rose people look after Rookwood and sell roses from there every year. It will be exciting to see what your other cemetery roses turn out to be.
