'Climbing Icebergs' that don't climb... found it Dee
It was in Botanica Dee:
It doesn't say which ones are the right ones and which ones are the wrong ones... but that's the explanation I was trying to remember when we spoke tonight
'Climbing Iceberg'...which is never without a bloom, is a disease-resistant, healthy, robust plant although it sometimes fails to climb, a fault of the propagation technique when the incorrect buds or eyes have been chosen for propagation.

When budding climbers it's important to take the buds that are on the long climbing canes. This is true of all climbers to guarantee the climbimg characteristic.
I have had very little experience with own-root but would suggest taking cuttings from the climbing canes.
