Please have a look at these pictures and tell me what is going on.
I could not bear to prune the Friesias in the winter because of many developing buds. Now I have a full blooming of Friesias totally out of sync with the rest of the garden. Normal first flush down here occurs late October/November.
So... does this flush belong to last summer or this summer???
There were a few odd flowers here and there on the same bushes all winter but not as many as there are now.
Have a look at the leaves. The old ones are still hanging on while the new ones are pushing their way into the world.
Crazy!!

I would guess Dee, that it is because you have had so much rain and because of that you probably havn't had as many frosts as usual.

I concur with Carole, but would add is it that they have not been pruned Dee, we have a tea that will flower early if it is not pruned as it has all the wood there to store the next flowering

Re: Unseasonable Friesias
Wow Dee, Friesia has ignored the Winter! She's certainly looking very floriflorous!
I think that's why my Ebb Tide bloomed so early - I didn't prune it.
I found another bud this morning!
That's 3 bushes with a bud! (Not that I'm waiting you understand!)

Hey Dee... 'Pierre de Ronsard' and 'Climbing Iceberg' did that here this year... I ended up snipping all the old leaves off because the older leaves were harbouring rust... I gave it a good trim too and it's coming back nicely... will be a cracker of a year I reckon. I would check that the older leaves aren't harbouring any old diseases too Dee. I only dead-headed this year (except the ones that got moved)... and the start has been amazing on some roses. I reckon that once it starts to dry out a bit things are going to take off. Betcha we have a killer black spot season too Dee

Yes Thee, everytime I went to prune Friesia it had a few flowers on it so I would leave it til 'next time'. Then it put up this big heap of buds and flowers. I will have to try and prune it a bit when this flush ends because the bushes are so raggy and untidy.
Simon I would love to hope you are wrong about your black spot prediciton but I guess you know what you are talking about. What are your reasons for thinking that?
On this matter of light winter pruning, I think I will try it out on a few more roses. I looked today and I found a flower or three on some others I did not prune hard. Tineke, Honor and Iceberg.

Lots of thick new lush growth and so much wet soggy ground... betcha it is real humid when it warms up because its so wet... black spot heaven I reckon.
