Where is everybody?

Post by Billndee on 9th July 2009, 6:21 pm

Wow, is this forum quiet this week! It seems everybody in the southern hemisphere has hibernated for the winter, or flown north!
If it wan't for Bemo and Alee posting photos of their beautiful roses now flowering on the other side of the world, nobody would be talking about anything. Mad Rolling Eyes
I'll tell you about what I have been doing: pruning.
Exciting, isn't it. Suspect

Hi Billndee i just looked in too.

Today i planted seedlings in vegie garden, dug up the last of the potatoes...some of which had started growing again......and tried to dig weeds, but the soil is soooo sticky and heavy that I just heaved the weeds onto their backs, to see if the next rain washes it off for me. Cold, windy. bare root roses are in, no flowers, pruned or not pruned, wet soils, staying inside, just looking, rain, frost, I think I have covered why we do not post much in winter other than reporting the newly planted bare roots. OK, lets pick a subject and just talk, Lets make the topic " Wish List" the five roses that you would die for.

I'm still away... my Dad is in hosptial after an operation to remove a bowel cancer... so I've been up here all week seeing him and helping out. I fly home tomorrow evening. Dad seems to be making a slow recovery... but it will be a long journey.

I am sorry to hear that Simon. i bet it has been a worrying time for you and your family. I hope your dad makes a full recovery.
btw, you keep up all the good vegies and unrefined food. That will hold you in good stead against the same thing. (sorry, this is a grannie thing)

My 5 roses would have to be Charlotte, Sidonie, Empress Josephine,Zephirine Drouhin and Louise Odier. It is so hard to wittle it down to 5, but these are 5 that I have not got and would love to get.

Trying to stay warm and dry. We've had 2 inches of rain since 9 am - and that's just today - yesterday was worse. This is 'occasional showers' - I'll go for my weather forecasting methods any day. Roses all look fast asleep except The Fairy . I've nearly finished another quilt. Heading for Hobart on Thursday Monday next week until Monday but I don't expect anyone to come out in this weather. We're staying at the Fountainside so as not to disrupt Amy and Kim and the houseful of kiddies. Got the suite for $99 a night so even if its crappy weather we'll have a veggie place. Hoping to visit a few nurseries. Keep well all.

ps - I'll be doing a rose quilt next.

Feel like catching up with anybody while you are in Hobart Blossom? That is if you can fit it in. Maybe some could even do a nursery trawl with you? bounce

what are your dates, Blossom?

We are tied up with mainland visitors for a few days, but maybe they don't co-incide? Very Happy

A catch-up would be nice.

I think we should invite more members from Europe and from other parts of the world to have "reciprocal friendship" like Bemo said. That way we'll have discussions going on through out the year and we'll have a lot of pictures.

I think this is the rose-growers' hibernation time. I've pruned all mine, a bit earlier this year. I had to wait too long for flowers last year! It cheers me up to see new leaves appearing already but hope no more frosts happen.
I bought a new rose yesterday - a Delbard - Bordure Nacre. It looks very pretty, has anyone grown this one ? I'm still waiting for my ordered roses to arrive, should be next week Very Happy

I agree with you Alee, and since we seem to have every climate in Australia we would have something in common with someone ( I hope that makes sence) So welcome anyone around the world Very Happy
