I have invited Girija and Viru to this forum. They are rose breeders from India.

Bruce, is not India more arid in places as you go towards the equator than us and humid closer you come to us. By the map I looked at the Tropic of Capricorn is closer to them than you/us

David, I think the high temperature and dry humidity of India would match a lot of Australia, no doubt the humidity near their ocean and Oz east coast would be very similar. Remember they have forrests, tigers and elephants in their jungles. It's not all arid.
I visited my daughter yesterday who lives just near the Harbour Bridge and questioned her regarding UK weather. She was there for 3 years working in an air condittioned office but ventured outdoors to walk to work.
She said its warm for 3 weeks in summer but not humid and the long cold snowy winters are unbearable for an Aussie. She built a garden while there and couldn't seem to cope as everything was frozen or snowing. I suggested she invest in a blowtorch to soften the garden beds so she could dig them so as to be ready for the very short growing season.
She enjoyed going across to the continent through most of the snow fields skiing. I told her to visit Josephenes garden at Malmaison but guess it was not exciting enough for a 28 year old young lady of the world. She mentioned she has seen enough castles to last her for the rest of her life.
I have had a look at the American Rose Hybridisers site and they seem to be using a lot of snow tolreant roses in their breeding as they do get a lot of snow there especially up near the Canadian Boorder. I also told her to go to David Austins for a cup of coffee but it was very low on her priority list of things to see in the 3 years.

The point I am making that a lot of breeding is being done for winter hardy roses as a great deal of their market is in countries like I mentioned.
The closest climate to us would probably be India and the breeder is working along the Alister Clark lines.

I have very briefly met (via email) Viru and Girija and they were lovely people with so much good advice... I really hope they will make themselves at home here as I think we are on a joint mission... I hope everyone gives them a warm Aussie welcome Smile
