Further to the worm juice postings

Post by paulh on 24th November 2014, 01:06

While picking up my worm casting today, I was able to have a good discussion about this topic. The people I get the castings from, are local for me and are into it in a big way.
I mentioned that sometimes I add Malasses to the mix to aid the livening up process, however it may appear that this method may not be that beneficial. I mentioned that as i understood, some rose enthusiasts were adding Seasol & Fish emulsion to kick things off in thr worm tea brewing.

This chap, talked and I listened, mainly because a lot of info was a bit hard for me to understand in such a short meeting. He mentioned that adding fish emulsion that we buy from the shops isn't worth buying, because of the method in how they produce it. He suggested the Fish Hydrolysate was the only way to get the complete benfits using fish without loosing any of the goodies. Apparently, with emulsion, the heating process it goes through, all but kills any real benefits. As for seasol, in his opinion, if it has any proservitaves in it, it has to be a no no when brewing.
Hmmmm, not sure about that one. He's set up is cool, right down to using microscopes.

He buys the Hydrolysate from sampi.com.au here in Fremantle, I recall him saying it cost about $20 for 20 litres, anyway if you look up sampi's it will explain it all.

He mentioned a company in Queensland called NTS, where he buys bags of, ummm I think he said microbiotics and bacteria mixtures, which costs him $170 a bag. He was kind enough to give me a small bag to use, that was nice.

Hopefully, this info hasn't been discussed previously, otherwise, I've just wasted finger power on the laptop. lol

That sampi company has eluded me along the way. I see it comes from South Australia. I get my fish emulsion from Freo area and it is made fresh everyday

Further info, they state it has a shelf life of 18 months, however in a recent email, they say it will last a lot longer than that.

Thanks John, ummm, can you please explain about the pro plus. Is this what you use? What is your opinion on the two labels? The sampi one lacks certain details.

The Phos-Plus stands for Phosphate Plus......they are both my drums......I'm thinking about taking a sample to a chem lab and analyzing them.....the Phos+ is thick and there is no way you can put it thru a fine nozzle as is , unless you filter it right down.......with the Sampi, it might pass NASAA for organics, but what it doesn't tell me is how it is broken down into its different substances.....that alone will not make me buy another one.....I don't know what I am getting......hence sending solutions to a chem lab....

Ok, I hear what your saying, I will email the said person who sells me the castings, whom is pointing me to hydrolysate, to get him to explain exactly how it works and the breakdown.

With reference to the two labels,

Sampi = has a disclaimer
Phos-Plus 125 = does not.

Sampi = does not seem to have an 'analysis'
Phos-Plus = does, "but" the biggest ingredient seems to be "fats and oils', the total ingredients seems low

Here is a sample photo of the Sampi.....Mine.....Seasol
The Sampi is the thickest in constitution and only marginally ahead of mine and the Seasol pours like water. The other two pour like oatmeal.
The smell is of a very fishy smell, where mine is more dominant than Sampi and the Seasol has a mind of its own.
The Seasol does not have that oily fatty feeling, but the other two have.....
Discounting the Seasol and we look at the color of the other two , we see mine has the crush fishy look.....now we can see the Sampi is the darker and not fishy color, which ask me what is giving it that dark color....humeric acid by chance, or is it some other organic item which allows it to keep its organic rating....who knows.... scratch

Thanks John, the centre pic looks like the fish emulsion I currently use and it has a very strong smell, mine smells more like a bad case of diarrhea. Reading Sampi's spool they do say that their product does not have an offensive smell.

With both products starting out the same, would the heating process that it goes through to end up as emulsion be the reason for the lighter colour of emulsion.
