Ausrose of the Year 2015

Post by Ausrose on 17th August 2014, 19:22

Last year on Australia Day the rose Joyce Abounding was announced as the "Ausrose of the Year". The rose was selected by a select panel of Australia bred rose enthusiasts. This year the selection process has been changed and the "Ausrose of the Year" will be selected by rosarians in general with the only criteria being to be eligible to vote you must grow at least one Australian bred rose. The five roses up for section are:- Let's Celebrate (Grant), Victoria Gold (Welsh), 100 Not Out (Walsh) Governor Macquarie (Grant), and Fleminton Racecourse (Chapman).  Those wishing to take part in the selection  process should post their favoutrite on the thread.

GOVERNOR MACQUARIE ( Governor Macquarie Bi-centenary Rose)
BREEDER-Trevor Grant
YEAR BRED-2004
TYPE-Hybrid Tea
AVAILABLE-Swanes Nurseries and Swiss Nursery

This is a seriously disease free rose bush from the vast rose growing experience of celebrated Australian rose breeder and ribbon winner Trevor Grant. Plenty of colourful blooms on a good upright grower gives rise to its vigour and unbelievable disease resistance. Loves the old cut and snip, just grows on back carrying more and more bountiful blooms. Named for the “Father of Australias, Governor Macquarie as part of the Bicentenary celebrations of his Governorship. (1810 to 1821) Governor Macquarie would have been proud that at last the Aussies are beginning to beat the rest of the world in rose breeding too.

I certainly agree with you Brettv68 they are all very beautiful roses. I have all of them growing and wouldn't part with anyone of them. I think this group and many other Australian bred roses show the are every bit as good as imported roses.

Thank you  Brett v68 and David for entering into the spirit of things and posting a selection. Also David thank you for the thumbs up. If the boss gives you the thumbs up you have to be doing something right.

The AQ is a Flemington Racecourse fan.

A very good choice Barbara B. In 2008 at the National Rose Society of Australia Inc. Conference associated rose show in Adelaide a vase of Victoria Gold won a special Royal National Rose Society award which I believe it was the first time such an award was given to a vase of roses outside of England.

I was the link between Trevor Grant and the Hawkesbury Council that led to what was Grant seedling becoming the rose Governor Macquarie. As part of the Governor Macquarie bi centenary celebrations a bed of the celebration rose was planted in front of the Windsor Library. The planting of the bed was quite an affair with the NSW Governor along with the State President of the Rose Society of NSW and Hawkesbury Mayor Bart Basset planting individual bushes. For those interested in breeding one of the parents of Governor Macquarie is Folklore and it is an extremely tall grower.

If I had to choose a second one, it would be very close between Flemington Racecourse and Governor Macquarie.

Trevor  did tell me a number of years back but unfortunately I can't remember. It hasn't been documented anywhere according to what I am aware of and it maybe lost forever.

The general consensus in NSW is Let's Celebrate hasn't lived up to expectations however I have two bushes of it and am quite happy with them.
