This coming Winter I plan to bolster my stock of Australian bred roses for the show bench. As space in my garden is limited and it is getting very expensive to grow roses for the show bench I've decided to only buy three new Aussies these being Amazing Grace (Chapman), Dame Nellie Melba (Chapman) and Love's Gift (Thomson).

How many rose bushes of each variety do you need to produce, say, a vase of 12 perfect roses for the bench? I realise that production rates vary from variety to variety, and some are more bloomiforous, but just a general idea.

I generally recommend 5 bushes per cultivar.

Oh, goodness - an extraordinary list of nurseries, roseman. Feel like I should do an o'seas nursery tour! There's an idea! ha ha. Seriously though, not sure how I import Ghuislaine from one of these nurseries?

I believe Thomas For Roses carries Ghislaine, rosebud.

What a magical name. Always loved that one. Once, after a scotch or seven, I fancied changing my name to Ghislaine de Feligonde. Someday, after the eighth libation, I just might.

I just had a read through Thomas' PDF catalogue. They have a LOT of varieties and are very competitively priced. Has anyone ordered from them before?

I have never done so, Zoe, because of archaic payment policies, but Thomas has a sterling reputation as a supplier, and the business has many, many, many fans here.

Great to hear Smile I will most likely order through Jean because us hills folk have thing about supporting local business, it's almost like a religion up here. That and the local CFA, hehe. Those boys have saved all of our behinds at one time or another.

But it's nice to hear good reviews incase I'm overcome with desire for Ghislaine Smile

As you know I do not favour one nursery, if a nursery has what I am after that is who I purchase from. As mentioned prior, if you can get a good relationship with the owner that helps IMO. Jean is fantastic at Reliable, Noel/Judy at Misty are as well. Thomas have what I want and have in the past. They are a very old couple which know roses and if they deal with cheques and money orders, that's the way I go, yes it is a hassle but the roses are great. Barry at Treloars is good and so on and on.

I was just thinking along those lines, roseman. The rose suppliers across the board in Oz are ethical, obliging and genuinely helpful. It's a pleasure doing business with all of them.

Rosebud

Someone gave us a cutting grown Ghislaine de Feligonde but it did not flower and was a real mess of a grower so we tossed it.

Oh no! I was really falling for her Sad

But you're right, I don't want a rose that behaves like a high-maintenance girlfriend.

It may do well in the cool and better soil. Our stuff is a bit acidic and some roses just don't like it.

It is a very nice rose and it does grow a bit better at the place where we got it though it was not fantastic.
