Promises/Help/Jobs to Do

Post by The Lazy Rosarian on 15th December 2013, 17:02

To all our posting members/friends/contacts, here is a Christmas wish that some will take up, some others might not. I am having the Christmas break between then and New Year off work. I have plans do lots of things here. lol!  So here is the opportunity to ask questions that I may have(most probably) forgotten to to do for others. Do not be outrageous with the replies. Most of this is going to be computer(google) related, or from my Alshiemers memory, which I forget.
A once in a lifetime chance.

Regards David

P.S. PM me if you do not want to be answered publicly here.

It's my Christmas present to any that wish to take me up on the offer. I will do the "leg work" as it is called and find out the information that you might not be able to find. Lets use a simple one, lets say you have been looking for a rose that is in circulation in the world and is not here to the best of your knowledge. Here we go.

Hi David I am looking for a rose named "Koko Loko" do you know where I get obtain it.
I(me) go to HMF, look at all the info, it's breeder code is WEKbijou, sold by Weeks in America. Here in Australia Swanes are there agent. I go snooping( I am good at it) around a bit further and find that it is here under trial and maybe released in 2014 as "Soul Sister". The scenario above is how it is done.
This is just one service I will endeavour to do, it might be a book, anything rose related.

If we pay the quarantine people we could get it. If you find who grows it in the US, there might be a way to piggy back it with another nurseries imports, think outside the rectangle here Betsy. The other way which is LEGAL, find someone in the US that you know and ask them to send seed. I will germinate it and send to when growing

The rigmarole involved in getting plants
/seeds into this country makes me want to curl up in a corner of my rectangle and pull the covers over my head.

Not only do I not know anyone who grows or who has Secret Garden Musk Climber seeds, I do not know anyone in the USA who gives a fig about roses. In fact, apart from you guys and one mildly interested friend, I don't know anyone at all who gives a fig about roses.

Oh...betsyw, I so know what you mean ...

Apart from a few including a florist friend, and my family, all think I'm a bit nuts... wink wink, nod nod ... oh there she goes again!

Still, I can't help myself. Dream, sleep, eat roses ...  Wink

I thought you had contacts/friends in the US Betsy, which had it or could get some seed for you. This is why I replied to your post about, Promises/Help/Jobs to Do. The sending of seed is the easy part, I do it for the cost of postage, no problems. Read the disclaimer below,
I will try for seeds as a Christmas present to you Betsy, but Christmas will be late this year. I will also check on plant material.

It's sad but true, David, that my family and friends in the USA only get enthusiastic about roses that arrive by Interflora ;-)

If you pull off the SGMC caper, not only will I pay all expenses (of course) but I'll get you a present to match, and that's a promise. If several plants come out of this, I am happy to share, natch!

If it doesn't happen, though, then the world will come to an end.

Nahhhhhh ;-)))) David, my expectation level is really rock bottom - this a tough and complicated process requiring incredible patience and persistant networking, and a job lot of luck.

Betsy, here is the start of the chase, copied from my post on the Rose Hybridizers Forum

Hello everyone, I know this is a long shot. Don't forget I am in Australia. Does anyone grow this rose. From HMF, the only nursery in the US that grows it is Burlington plus others. I am unsure of the other nurseries that still operate. Bierkreek does, but again from there to Australia could prove interesting. The reason I ask is that a friend would love dearly to grow it here in Australia. From all I have read, so would I. If for whatever reason people/members would rather talk to me direct we could do it through, Personal Messages.
I do apologise for the way this is written, I hope I have not done anything wrong.

Regards David.

Good grief, you're quick, David. It's Christmas, and you should be doing more festive things.

As I gas on and on about this rose so much, perhaps I should stop screwing up its appellation. Its correct name is Secret Garden Musk Climber.  A found rose, and probably not a musk at all.

Since David is going to some trouble to get this thing, I can at least go back and amend all my botched names in this thread.

How about this a Christmas starter Betsy,
Hi David,

Merry Christmas! I have Secret Garden. I don't know about getting living material into Australia, but I can send a few seeds if you'd like. They will germinate, though it appears many self seedlings tend to be quite weak until established, IF they mature.

I have a few hybrids with it this year. One is VERY scarily vigorous. It's from Yellow Sally X Secret Garden. In its first year, it's out grown a five gallon nursery can. It hasn't flowered yet.

Shall I gather some seeds for Christmas? Thanks. Best to Carole.

David, you are Legend.

Can you PM me with some idea of how to reimburse and also demonstrably thank your US friend, in the first instance?

No idea, what are friends for, they ask nothing in return, as I was told as a young person. Lets see how my last email to them returns, I have just finished it. Scrooge is on the job

OMG, wouldn't THAT be amazing? Kim Rupert's most beautiful and fragrant climber. Actually, I've always wanted a Rupert rose, to honor this exceptional rosarian. Kim's a hero, and when talk turns to eloquent promotion of rose knowledge, no one is his superior.

This one will take some research from both of us Dan, let me think for a day. Are you a premium member of HMF, this will help.

Wendy this maybe possible, time to talk to the breeder at David Austin's and another person there. The other thing which comes to mind is as you are close to Treloars can you start the ball rolling by asking them. Gary Matuska is the boss, start at the top.
