Congrats to Swane's on Golden Child - Gold Medal, Rose of the Year 2013

Post by betsyw on 2nd December 2013, 11:59

I don't see the list of 2013 winners yet on the National Rose Trial site, but The Gardening Magazine has reported that Swane's Golden Child has taken out both the Gold Medal and also the Rose of the Year 2013 title. More info on the link below.

Big round of applause to Finbarr and all the staff at Swanes for such a magnificent result.Clap Clap Clap Clap Clap Clap Clap

To win a gold medal at the National Trial Grounds certainly indicates Swanes have another outstanding rose for sale. If my memory serves me well Swanes' previous gold medal winner was Pope John Paul 11.

The Davis Medal for the best Australian bred rose went to a Brundrett floribunda.

As yet David like you I am in the dark however as editor of the Australian Rose Annual I am due to get a report from the trial ground manager so as soon as I get that I will pass on the information.

If the rose is synonymous with Sparkle n' Shine as suggested (and it certainly looks like it), then it's a Weeks rose bred by Christian Bedard, so HMF says

I think David was referring to the Brundrett floribunda.

As Sparkle'n'Shine and Golden Child have the same code name (i.e.WEKjunjuc) they are the same rose. Although roses can be given different names for various reasons e.g. Bride's Dream, Fairytale Queen or Marchenkonigan are all the same rose. There is only one code name this being KORoyness for this particular rose.

So it can be seen if you are not sure whether you have the rose you were after check the code name not the name.

Ah, yes, of course, Ausrose, thanks. The Brundrett pic only came up for me just now, and so I get the reference clearly.

Betsy, is there a relationship between Sparkle n' Shine and Golden Girl, I can't find anything to link them, unless the codename is it, WEKjunjuc).
Where did you find the codename please Doug ?

For the record the registered exhibition name of the rose is Sparkle & Shine (not Sparkle'n'Shine as previously recorded)with a code name WEKjunjuc (Modern Roses 12). As the code name for Golden Child it is WEKjunjuc (World Federation Rose Societies official trial ground results for Adelaide) they are the same rose.

David up until Modern Roses 12 code names were part and parcel of information on individual roses however for what ever reasons the code names were left out of the hard copy version of MR12. Members of ARS have access to an electronic version of MR12 and I have noticed some of the roses do have code names. I have been told from my sources in the ARS code names are being added to the electronic version of MR12 however this is a enormous job and will take sometime.

The link above is the "Golden Girl" from HMF. When I looked for the Weeks code of WEKjunjuc it did not appear. Thanks for the information Doug. You have solved some of the mystery, well done.

Swane's roses have won  six Rose of the Year Awards in the Adelaide trial grounds to date these being:- Burgundy Iceberg(2005), Daybreaker(2006), Beach Blanket (2009), PJP11(2010), Home Run(2011) and Golden Girl(2013). Of these I rate PJP11 the best rose as it has outstanding exhibition form and has a magic fragrance as a bonus. I predict PJP11 will be the top exhibition rose in NSW during 2014 displacing Moonston.
