Do I need new soil?

Post by silkyfizz on 12th November 2013, 15:51

I need to remove a rose that was incorrectly labelled as a bare root. I planted this in July and now find it clashes horribly so it has to go. I am hoping to plant in its place what I originally wanted. My question is this: As it is only a young plant growing there for a short time, do I still have to replace the soil in that spot? It has grown well and it would appear to have a healthy root system. New soil? Just some compost? Cardboard box? Or just bung in a replacement and hope for the best?

IMO, it had not been in the ground long enough to contaminate( leave any unwanted residues) it, could just add some new potting mix/compost and turn it over a bit.

Yep Maree, it sure is. Have no idea what to do with it. Probably bung it into a pot and give it away. Do you want it?

How long can a discarded rose have grown in one spot before you should get new soil?

Not sure what you are asking....... are you asking about a rose that has not being given attention and just left to its own means?

Sorry, I wasn't clear. Smile Do you have to replace the soil if you've only had a new rose in the ground (whatever amount of attention you're giving it) for a couple months and want to replace it, or is there a specific age you have to pass before you have to replace soil? (still not sure if that's clear, sorry. . .) Smile

I understand.... you would replace a small amount of the soil for fresh inlay as the previous plant had only being there a couple of months...... put cow manure in the bottom of the hole and give it a layer of soil above it and then fresh soil/potting mix around the new plant....
