Ozeboy's Sweet Chariots - First Flower

Post by betsyw on 26th September 2013, 17:42

As promised, here is quick pic of one of Bruce's two divine SC babies, the very first bloom. To die for, the scent. Plenty more blooms coming.

Remind me again Betsy about Sweet Chariot please. I'm having one of those senior moments.

Okay, the story goes like this...

Once upon a time (1984), the great American miniature hybridiser Ralph Moore crossed one of his pink minis, "Little Chief"

....with a old rambler/multifora/cl polyantha called "Violette"

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The issue of that union was a cascading wonderment covered in pompom blooms of deep lilac, mauve and pink, with the fragrance of wild violets and the charm of clove pinks.

Moore planted some of these new creatures in hanging baskets, where their pendulant habit and exquisite scent inspired him: "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot", he thought, and so we have

SWEET CHARIOT

SC is hugely loved in the USA, and also a popular variety with breeders. Ebb Tide and sibling Midnight Blue are two of its most recent descendents. Yet it's inexplicably hard to find in Australia, so thank god for Ozeboy, from whom I recently obtained the most beautiful, healthy and adored plants.

Sounds and looks wonderful Betsy. How lucky are you? Do you plan on growing SC up a trellis or maybe a basket? That photo looks amazing. Please keep up the photos to show us how it goes.

A pot on a pedestal, I think, silky. In the US I had a wonderful sculptural birdbath, a swooping steel curve with a copper bowl. I stuck the SC pot on top of that, and the blooms cascaded down, to hide the pot. Nothing so architectural in my current possession, so I'll look around.

A very fitting solution putting this little princess on a pedestal.
