First Attempt

Post by Ausrose on 3rd September 2013, 10:40

For quite sometime the African Queen and I have wanted to do some hybridising unfortunately time restrictions haven't allowed us to do this to the extent we would like. However we have managed a few and below is our first.[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

As far as I can ascertain the rose doesn't have a fragrance but with me that doesn't mean much and by the time the African Queen got to smell the rose it was very old so we are not sure. The standout feature of the rose is it's colour a magnificent water melon pink. The photograph doesn't do justice to the rose as it is more intense than it appears in the photograph. I will bud it onto multiflora when the time is right as it is on its own roots and I am led to believe this will improve various aspects of the rose.

Congrads Ausrose, I hope you find the time you would like to develop your interest further, you have a wonderful gift, we would love to see your name attached to a Prize Winner.
And the colour, so apt as the fashion at the moment is exactly as you explained the colour of your rose.

Doug are you thinking of registering so you can show it or do you not have to so you can show it. This is after you evaluate after budding it.

Thank you for the encouragement. I do realise one swallow doesn't make a Summer but  I'm sure we are going to get a lot of enjoyment out our new endeavour even if we don't breed another Iceberg or the like.

Eventually it will be registered however in NSW it can be shown unregistered as a seedling. If it clusters it would fit quite well into the Decorative Class and it would be registered as a Grandiflora. This class includes Queen Elizabeth.

John the African Queen says hi to you and Anna and thinks your suggestion is a good one.

At this stage it is only a small bush in a 20cm pot during the week I will transfer it into a big pot and give it extra attention so we can take buds from it in November. Glynis said she said she would love to give Anna a plant of the rose when we get it going if that is possible with all the restrictions between the "dark side" and WA.

Doug, budwood should be allowed to post to W.A. as there would be no soil attached, you would also have to remove the leaves.

David I'm sure you would have to have them dipped in the 3 solutions they use for pests and fungus. This makes it a very expensive exercise as the cuttings have to be taken personally which involves half a day travelling, petrol and $32 for the certificate.
I'm not doing them anymore other than to send to personal friends.

Bruce in the past I have sent wood to Simon in TAS without any costs(certificate/dips), I am only assuming this would be to W.A. as well.
Sorry to Hijack  for minute Doug.

David, all pieces of plant material with or without roots have to be dip treated and inspected for issue of a certificate. Plants going to any state of Australia with the exception of NSW and Queensland have to be treated and sent with a certificate attached or enclosed.

No doubt there are a few people sending plant material without treatment but they are lucky not to be a permanent boarder or guest of the government.

Plant material for destination outside of Australia has to be arranged through AQIS.

Would suggest sending roses for trial to the Qld trial garden and not SA as dipping solutions may effect the rose however slightly.
