How long do modern roses live ?

Post by maree on 17th August 2013, 11:06

I am notoriously impatient with roses that don't perform , or that i just didn't like and have dug out and remodeled the beds so often , but the roses that have survived are getting old now , Heaven Scent which i love is about 8 years old and Oklahoma about 6 years , these are standard roses , usually after this time i decide its time to try a new rose and out it comes as well , but i like these two roses very much , Heaven Scent doesn't seem to produce any new shoots from the base and Oklahoma is slowing down too i think , i have tried the Swanes trick of scraping the base with your pruners when pruning to trick the rose but it hasn't worked , any suggestions , THANKS ....

WORLD’S OLDEST ROSE
One of The World’s Oldest Roses is growing in the courtyard of Hildesheim Cathedral in Germany.
Said to be over 1000 years old it is climbing the apse in the cathedral courtyard to a height of some 15 meters
The rose is a symbol of the city and its prosperity, and legend has it that Hildesham will never decline as long as the rose keeps blooming.    The legend was confirmed during World War 11 as the rose survived the bomb attacks in 1945 that destroyed the cathedral, and grew new shoots a few weeks later.

The rose was blooming here even before the church was built. There is a legend about the rose. Once upon a time, a king while out hunting lost a sacred relic containing a lock of St. Mary’s hair. His men looked everywhere and finally found it in the forest, hanging on a wild rose tree. The king thanked God and built a cathedral where the rose tree stood.

Of the roses I grow I would have about 25 that are over 20yrs old and still performing as well as ever. I believe my success is due to the way the roses have been pruned during the period with the major contributing factor being cutting out deadwood and all wood when it became in the vicinity of 4yrs old.

Thats what i try to do Ausrose , distinguishing between deadwood and okay wood can be tricky sometimes , but i do give them a good prune , maybe i should be a bit more ruthless , my roses are all hybrid teas , a couple of floribundas and a climber . I have read that depending on what they are grafted on to , that hybrid teas can last between 5-10 years , just wondered if that was true .......

Maree, I was shown by the Vic. Rose Society, how to prune roses recently.  I did know quite a bit before, but boy, you learn something every day!  They had a wire brush which they rubbed over old wood to try to get it to "sprout".  Well, I did this and I'm happy to say my Papa Meilland, Hannah's Rose just to name a couple, have done just that!  Try a brush instead!

I read somewhere where the American Rose Society is not pushing the wire brush method, because they say you don't know if you are rubbing off a future cane growth.........maybe somebody on here has further evidence....

Shocked

I'd be darned well expecting a better lifespan than that!! Several roses at the old house (same property) are 60-70 yrs old (HTs and polyantha). A couple of them even have RMV but they're okay.

Yes Autumn , i agree , i don't mind pulling out roses i don't like , but i like these two , Sue and Ozroz i followed Swanes method , maybe i need to start a new topic on how to get roses to sprout new canes and brush up on the difference between old and new canes , i've never heard of the wire brush method , would be interesting to hear different views on this , thanks everyone .....

Interesting reading here guys, thanks.
Ausrose, can you give a bit more detail about cuttiing out all wood at about 4 yrs. Do you mean cutting down to the ground/within a few inches of the base? Every 4 years?
I tend to hard prune my HT's but have been told this is no longer accepted practice, but to just remove 1/3 to half and then summer prune. What do others think?

Take a wire brush and brush off that scaly woody stuff on the bud union at the base of the rose bush. Try not to brush off any promising bud eyes while you're at it. Rose lore says this exercise will stimulate and provide room for basal breaks--new canes from the bud union. Whether this is really true has not exactly been proven, but it seems like a good idea and maybe the bush you just butchered will consider it a pat on the head and recognize that you still love it.

Neptune, I did just as you suggested and an old "inherited" rose, has 4 - 5 new basal breaks on it. I'm thrilled! they are growing well and look very healthy! On this old rose, I decided it was better than nothing because it looked a bit sad when I got it!
