Can you identify this rose?

Post by coylum on 16th August 2013, 16:43

Hi,

We live in Mount Eliza in Victoria. This old rose plant has seen better days but it produces the most beautiful scented blooms, which when cut do not shed their petals and last for ages indoors. The new shoots grow about 600mm straight up from the old wood and have a single bloom per stem. Even though the plant has seen better days it is still a prolific bloomer and as mentioned before they make perfect single stem cut flowers.

The reason I want to identify it is that we are going to have to move it soon due to renovations and I doubt this will be successful! I would really like to plant several of these as we love the perfume and the appearance.

Hi,
I tried to put the photos up but the board won't allow me to do this until I have been a member for 7 days! I guess I will just have to wait unless there is a way of inserting JPEG images directly into the message (?)

Coylum, I see what you mean about the flower. Lovely. I like that shade of pink, soft without that harsh lollipop colouring that some pinks have. Sorry can't help you with identification though. I'm sure there will be someone here who can help you though, a very knowledgeable group!

PS: Out of curiosity, how do you improve the soil with all the rocks covering the soil....

My apologies to all concerning my inability to provide the images directly in the message! I don't understand the limitation of 7 days imposed by this forum.... Thank you neptune for posting the links!

I find scoria to be a very good mulch, it holds a large amount of water and does not acidify the soil, deplete the nitrogen or attract termite activity! I apply rose food on the surface and water it in.

coylum, did the rose come with the house or what era did the rose get planted, any background might help.

Coylum, Welcome to the forum. Not much these people don't know. Using scoria is new to me, but it looks great in the photos and I have taken on board you comments on it's merits. Sorry, can help with the rose ID, bu it's certainly lovely.

My apologies for the delayed response but I have been away for a bit... As best I can determine the rose would have probably been planted around 1985. In its heyday it was obviously a very vigorous grower. It now needs TLC to keep it going but it still puts our long stems from the old wood and flowers right through the summer/autumn months

Thanks for the welcome... and yes, it is a lovely rose. I have been impressed with how well this west facing bed has thrived since I replaced the "normal" wood mulch with scoria. One other advantage is that the birds can't flick it all over the path!

Glad someone else has vandal birds! The blackbirds do make a mess. Anyway, back on track! I shall certainly try the scoria this year on certain beds. Thanks again.

Neptune, this is just a suggestion, but have you tried spraying the buds with Allum. My mother used to use this on her buds and the birds did seem to leave them alone!

Sorry, only one"L"! It is a mineral salt, double sulphate of aluminium and potassium. It has a bitter taste - not that I've tried it - but the birds aren't very keen!
