Pilgrimage to Swane's

Post by betsyw on 23rd February 2013, 11:03

A few of us are going to dig ourselves out of the Hunter Valley and take our tri-annual road trip to Swane's in the coming fortnight . I'm assuming that this might be a good time to see the autumn flush, after the NSW rains.

The plan is to be conservative and discerning, to make it an educational stroll... but, yeah, it will proabbly end up as a grabfest of flashing credit cards.

Anyhting we should be looking for before the gimmee madness takes over? How's their coffee these days?

Betsy if it was I, I would contact Finbarr and try to get him there when you are, only a thought.

Great idea, but I would not want to inconvience the MD of Swane's just for us, esp as weather or unforseen circumstances could delay our drive. . Woudl be good to know when Finbarr is on site, and perhaps work toward driving over when he is there. Or just not bother the poor man at all ;-))

Betsy, for those of us who are in no position to traipse up to Swanes, could you take lots of pics of those that take your fancy, and maybe even daggy looking ones, to post for us here. It might help us make any adjustments needed to the "list" - you know that thing that's a bit like my waistline, that never shrinks but seems to expand no matter what I do. It's still so dry here there isn't much point in visiting rose growers around Melbourne, not many flowers to see I'd imagine.

Silky, any rose(worthwhile) grower that has a exhibition garden, should have flowers at present, your best bet is to contact them individually. Why not contact Treloars or Misty or Magic prior to going and explain what you are after.

I promise to take a million pictures. Have to get there first, but if all goes to plan, it will be before Easter. I am relying on my friend to get us there, because I hate driving the freeway. Besides she has a BMW X5 and I have a 14-year Land Cruiser that has a broken seat and gets about 2 metres to the gallon ;-)

Have a great time amid the roses with your friend Betsy. Yeah I think I'd opt for her BMW too, nothing like doing it in style eh?

Okay, we are going tomorrow, two of us (like herding acts trying to organise suitable day for three people).

Pix a-go-go. Any requests for particular roses you'd like to see if they are blooming?

Gee Betsy, where do I start? Let me see...
Queen Adelaide, Francis Dubrueil, Daybreaker, Monsieur Tillier, Scentimental, Compte du Chambord, LD Braithwaite, Gemini...anything that looks good, anything in the short fat perfumed department.
On your marks, get set, GO!!!

WE are off at 10am, so expect to be there by 11:30. I am not in the least fussed about meeting Finbarr - I think we can find our way around the joint with no probs, and just looking at the roses will yield plenty of info. ;-))))

Perhaps when you guys see some pix, you will have questions of your own for Finbarr ...

betsy, the garden has just been summer pruned in prep for an easter flush. if you delay your trip until the week prior to easter that would get you the most bloom to see

Thanks for that heads up, Finbarr. I just saw something about the 40 day prune-to-bloom cycle for the Swanes rose show, and I thought uh-oh.

I think we will defer the pilgrimage for a few weeks as suggested ;-)
