Cardinal Geoffrey Furneaux aka Byzantium

Post by betsyw on 2nd January 2013, 18:07

Friend has found a desciption of this rose, and would like to know more. Described as royal purple with golden stamens and rich clove scent.

I can't find anything in helpmefind. Any ideas?

Nothing pertinent. No Cardinal Furneaux on hmf, and only Warren's Byzantium under that appelation. Googled royal purple and yellow stamens, and a thousand hits turned up, but no hits with all search terms. Add clove scent to the mix, and it's dog's breakfast out there in googleland.

Warren's rose is absolutely NOT the rose, as description shows.

And here is info from friend:
My answer on this is going to be both unhelpful and lengthy, but here goes.

The Australian Quilting Association (or whatever it's actually called) set a 2011 competition: make a quilt using only yellow and purple. These competition quilts are only about 2 feet by 18 inches, and the best are currently hanging at Vinnies[St Vincents Private Hospital, Sydney]. There must be about thirty of them, and the work is generally admirable; not that I know a thing about quilting, but they are lovely objects. Subjects vary; the winner shows an elephant, second place two birds and purple mountains, sounds crude but they're done with many different shades, much nuance, some whimsy. Don't like them all, but I do like many.

Each has a written description, and the name of the quilter.

One is an abstract called rosa byzantium; almost all shades of purple, with one tiny dot of yellow close to the centre, indicating the stamen. I quoted from the accompanying description, which also gave the aka Cardinal GF.

Tomorrow I will go back down to that corridor, and either take a photo of the description or, if that turns out not to work, will copy it - and the name of the quilter. Names are usually accompanied by the name of the quilter's suburb (or, sometimes, state). If the quilter is a rosarian, this may help.

It has occurred to me that this may be an abstract work depicting a non-existent rose. It's possible. The description sounds so like rose porn, however, that I'm just not sure - but if the quilter is a rosarian, then she would know exactly how to describe a rose, extant or not.

At the risk of beating a dead rose, I have more information at hand. Following is the artist's description of the rose on her quilt, and a (poor) photo of the actual quilt itself.

It's ok to Betsy. Any idea what the page is out of as it has number on it. This might take a while.

The number is actually an exhibit number, not a page number. This quilt is part of an exhibition now on display at St Vincents Hospita in Sydney. The

Betsy, had no luck trying to track the rose so I tried tracking Salley Govey. This link might help:

Barbara, who's a clever girl, eh? Nice spotting! Silky, indeed I think it's time to turn matters over to Salley. My friend Gail has her phone number now, so we leave it to her to make contact or not. Will report any further findings if and when they come to hand. I can't even find a Cardinal Furneaux in Google, much less a rose named after this Prince of the Chruch.

Hunkered down in teh air conditioned bunker, I am just thinking (for absolutely the last time) about this wretched mystery quilted rose, and I'm wondering if Barbara isn't onto something with picking up on those GF initials...

I'm wondering if the Geoffrey Furneaux "rose" isn't in fact an extended metaphor for Covey's dad, GF Davey himself. A paean to her father, couched in horticultural references that, when you think about it, could be applied to a much loved gentleman.

That's it. I'm done.
