Re: Eyes For You

My Eyes for you is growing well in a tree sized purple glazed pot. When I first planted it just before this winter it had about 5 beautiful flowers on it which just looked like the ones on the cover of a Gardening Magazine of a few months ago. I am looking forward to seeing it develope more. The perfume is very different and I like it.

Last spring I pollinated this rose with Eyes for You

today I notice the one, and only seed produced, has germinated. With this yellow I am hoping for a recurrence of the original Hulthemia colours which is this.

David this is a photo of those Chinese Hulthemias taken in Xinjiang. This would have to be the brightest and cleanest yellow I have seen

Me too Rosy, it all depends on how many generation crosses have been involved with Eyes for You ,diluting the original Hulthemia yellow. The blotch is quite strong in Eyes for You , but I would really like the yellow colour as well.

Ok so this plant is doing really well in the heat. The plant is, the flowers not so much. If you live in QLD I can no longer recommend this rose Sad Unless you keep it in part shade, the flowers drop and fade way too quickly. Late winter it was beautiful and now it looks terrible. I am very sad. I am going to move mine under some shade cloth to see how the flowers go there.

Teesh, if it was me I would check al the background to a rose before buying one. Not just reading the publicity bit. I know it might be boring or silly but this method will give you the best results. Things like where it was bred, it's parents. The easiest way I think for you to do this is place the name in Mr. Google and see what comes up, you will be surprised IMO.

Post by RosyTeesh on 11th September 2012, 08:20

Hi Roseman, I did check the background and it didn't bother me at all. I still love the rose, I don't mind that the flowers wilter within days because they are beautiful for at least 3-4 days and always growing more. The plant itself is beautiful, bushy and green. I always do research before my purchases on many websites. This plant wasn't available here until this year, so it was hard to determine how it would go in QLD weather, I always like to experiment with different roses in the climate here.

I just know others on the forum want to buy it and I promised to update them so they don't buy something they may not like even though I like it. Hope that makes sense? Also, we have not had rain for almost 2 months and it is sweltering heat here, which is not usual for Spring.

RosyTeesh , thanks for the info on EFY , really helpfull , i too usually google roses before i buy them and have spent hours researching , but still have had some absolute duds , especially David Austins , guess it really does come down to location , location !!!!! I'm going to develop, a system from now on , where a new rose will go on trial first in a pot , then if its good make it into the bush garden and if its really good and available it gets to go into the standard rose garden . That should work lol ......

I'm doing the same thing Maree! Mine are thriving in pots which I heard is unusual? And some I have which were highly recommended by some growers and are half the size of the ones which I didn't think would do do well (all bare rooted this year). They all get the same treatment in the same garden so it's been very interesting.

I am not a David Austin fan. The one and only bush I have is Falstaff and it loses all its leaves each year for some reason. Also, the branches are very thin which makes the flowers too heavy for them. Not a nice cut flower for me. I want to rip it out! Although I can't say much about the Austins since I only have 1 ..

The flowers are just ok, but the stems droop. They're not as strong as most of my other roses. There's a few I would like to rip out this year. Most of them are ones that I bought and turned out to be completely different to what I bought.

I think you had some good words with 'Rose Chasing'. I will have a think Very Happy

Do you mean searching for particular roses to buy and where to buy them or for information on them before buying them?
