Just ordered, never tried

Post by betsyw on 13th August 2012, 13:40

Serious rosarians and breeders, nothing to see here, just keep moving ;-)))) But for all you more frivolous types, here's a play list: my last order of bareroot HT/Floris for the year. Any further additions will be potted up, ie Julia Child/Soul Mate.

All are destined for vase fodder, selected for fragrance and hopefully reasonable health and productivity.

Also, I confess, selected for shallow novelty value; have never had any of these. (in fact, I haven't had any Austins at all in decades). I expect some disappointments, but hey, selection process was slightly more scientific than my Melbourne Cup picks. Something old, something new, something deplorable, something blue (poiple, actually)

Ice Girl
Baronne de Rothschild
Sweet Intoxication
Big Purple
Perfume Passion (aka Beverly - Kordes)
Young Lycidas (the Austin gamble)

Very, very pleased to hear that, Neptune. I like comparing notes on these new-ish cultivars, such as Blackberry Nip (with maree et al). Particularly keen to smell SI. Look forward to your assessment!

Betsy, i think i fall into the frivolous type , so i'll keep reading , but might i say , i think i am being converted by the tea rose brigade , think i'll find a space for a couple of tea rose bushes next year . i've planted Baron De Rothschild too , mum has it , been a good rose . Big Purple i had , i loved it , lovely colour , but it was in the wrong spot , not enough sun , didn't flower all that well . Will be very interested to see how you go with the others Betsy ....

Baron E de Rothschild is an outstanding rose that does extremely well on the show bench in NSW in the decorative class. The sport of Baron E de Rothschild named Louisa Jane is lighter in colour than the Baron but is also a successful show bench rose. Here is a trivia question for those rosarians who like trivia. Who originally found the sport that became Louisa Jane and in what year?

Oh I AM pleased to hear that, Ausrose. The name Rothschild is linked with so many roses, with identical first initials, that I wan't secure about this one, was only hoping that MEIgriso was the right baronne/baroness/baron E deR that I had heard some good reports about over the years.

Ooo! Ooo! Ooo! I know the answer to your Louisa Jane pop quiz . (of course I looked it up immediately, and so am DQ'ed. Nice tidbit! Anyone grow her?)

I have three bushes of Louisa Jane that I am more than happy to grow. Roses from these particular bushes have won Decorative Class champion ribbons at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. If you are an exhibitor I would recommend you add this rose to your arsenal for the Decorative Class in shows. The rose is in the catalogue of both Thomas for Roses and Ross Roses.

I put my hand up for the frivolous and shallow group and planted Baronne Edmond de Rothschild and Big Purple, nothing to report yet.

Oh yeahhhhh. Getting excited about this coming season now. Thank you both for those divine pix.

Look, maree, see the pretty Baby Nip? Maybe a Nipper at this stage? Neptune, what's your assessment of the fragrance so far, or is it too early in the game to say, first bloom being sorta like first pancake to season the pan?

The Baronne bouqet is to die for. Maybe I'll quick-smart order a second one if the parcel hasn't already gone out.

Frivolous and a perfume hound...that's me. Betsy, I'll be interested to see how you find Sweet Intoxication and Big Purple especially as these were on my possible list this year. Love the colours and the perfume sounds divine. That's the trouble with this forum - apart from the fact that it's addictive lol, there are just too many roses that I want...

Oh yes, Ausrose, nothing frivolous or shallow about the Baron: that’s a proud display, congratulations!
I actually looked at him quite closely before I went back to pick him up and there were lots of positive comments ‘out there’ in cyberspace, particularly re fragrance and disease resistance. Isn’t that what we all look for?
It’ll be fun to all compare notes on him in different parts of Aus. Mine looked a bit daggy (as they do when they’ve been sitting in a bag in crowded boxes for some weeks), but pushed out lots of healthy new leaves in no time.

I have a confession to make the prize winning vase wasn't mine but belonged to Mark McGuire. Thanks for the positive remarks I will pass them onto Mark the next time I am in contact with him. In actual fact I haven't ever won a major award with the Baron however I've won a number with Louisa Jane the sport of the Baron. I did notice Thomas for Roses had another sport which I'm led to believe is a sport of Louisa Jane named Louisa Francis.
