Thirteen Variations from a Single Cross

Post by Guest on 10th June 2012, 19:15

I was blessed to come across a little minature rose called Wendy. From this rose when crossed with Abraham Darby came more than thirteen variations out of one seed pod. The ones listed here were registered, there are a few which were not and because of their fertility were kept for breeding purposes. Remember all these came out of one seed pod.

Thanks Maree, the clever one is Wendy and its ability to pull out every genetic variation out of a cross.

Thanks Sue Anne, thats the beauty of Wendy.

Dave the one above Riverina Girl is Naiad,singular, named after the nymphs who were the daughters of Aegaeus the river god.

You are a clever lad Warren, Mystery Yellow would have to be my favourite out of those, followed closely by several others.

Richard Walsh really liked Mystery Yellow and Naiad when he and his wife visited in April. M Yellow never stops flowering and I am amazed it never burns it self out LOL

Your seedlings are amazing!!! .....are they all miniature in habit & form?
How long have you been into breeding roses and how long before you can tell if a seedling is going to be a winner?
Sorry for all the questions...but I am gobsmacked!!

David Byzantium has no fragrance at all, but makes up for it in the 3/4 bud stage.

Bri Cal;

Although Wendy is a minature, it does'nt through that many, mainly Mini flora's and Floribunda's. I have been breeding roses since 2005 which is'nt really that long. How long does it take before you know if its a winner, I go through various cull stages , then the seedlings are planted in grow out beds. If a seedling is exceptional , when its between 6mths to a year you know its a beaut.
