rogues appear normally due to budwood being mixed up or stability issues on "sports". in this case we had two code names with only one letter in the names being different, but both being yellow flowered. we didn't notice the problem until it was too late and we had to start the process all over again. it took a couple of summers to be confident all the plants were right. we ended up being more than 2 years late with the release. safe to say the boss wasn't impressed.

Having received a few 'rogue plants' in the last few years >8@ (other nurseries) I'm really impressed that the problem has been taken seriously...

Just to sidetrack a bit from JC/SM. With responses from finbarr/Swanes I believe members from this forum are likely purchase from them in the future and/or this winter,
Regards David.

thanks, the field rose industry needs grass roots support, we are in a serious changing market right now that doesn't suit a traditional production outlook. hope you don't mind me joining the forum, we aren't afraid of feedback.

I think it's great that we have someone from the industry here and the explanation as to why the rose wasn't available is really interesting.

I'm impressed, Finbarr. So interesting, as Sally says. And yes, as roseman foreshadowed, on the strength of having you on board here, I'll be revisiting the Swane's 2012 catalogue for roses that I might have otherwise purchased elsewhere.

In all honesty Sally we have 2 other nurseries on the member list, but at present have not given as much time in the short time finbarr has. So the Thumbsup Thumbsup go up to finbarr.

Finbarr, pretty expensive plant, I just purchased Tournament of Roses from you for under $20. I have been through the HT's in your 2012 catalogue and found 30 very worthwhile healthy roses that should do well on the coast. You are no doubt aware that a lot of rose gardens in Sydney have been replanted with low maintainence natives.
Councils are insisting low water useage plants be planted and inspectors check this when doing the final building inspection.
At over $30 that rose would have to be very special.
Best of luck with it for we do appreciate Swanes bringing in some great roses that would not be available otherwise.

hmm, you could be right, and yes it should be a good performer. right again about the trends away by council, a problem affecting production volumes along with shrinking garden size. overall nurseryman always strive for the best. what is often hard is justifying our existence to the bank.

Finbarr, if Swanes can't operated at a profit then there's no hope for anyone else in the retail rose business. The Dural nursery is very well laid out with some very mature plants in the front gardens. David Cooper is one of your best assets. Your merchandising, brochure and care phamplet is excellent.
If I was critical I would mention the rose gardens are not up to the standard when Ben owned the business. I realise overheads have to be kept to a minium. I've possibly bought just on 100 bagged roses from Swanes and always question how hard the roots are cut back.

Everyone on the forum should aquire the Swanes brochure every year and buy one or two to try. I have walked around their gardens numerous times during the season and 'Good Samaritan" is always the best looking rose there, great bush, very healthy and always in bloom.

cheers thanks. Good Samaritan is one of our top 5 varieties of all time, not for sales but for performance; rarely does one match the other which is often confusing.
