Dumbfounded!!!???!!!

Post by tambralyngar on 17th February 2012, 20:30

I went out to my garden to do some deadheading this afternoon, and I was absolutely dumbfounded at what I discovered.....my Boule de Neige rose that was really starting to look good, with about three buds on it Monday morning, and about a foot high had been CUT OFF completely just above the bud union. It is gone my whole bush just been cut off and TAKEN Enraged I can't believe that someone would come and take the whole bush. I am not sure it will survive at all now.

I am tempted to put a sign in the front yard telling the person who took it that I am glad that they think I put my time, effort & money into growing my roses for their benifit Rant

I am just so angry at the moment about the whole thing, the worst part being I live in a cul de sac so it would have to be someone in my street Evil or Very Mad

Cutting it off there is weird. I've had a rose stamped on so it snapped off at the bud union (I grow some roses on the nature strip, having run out of sunny spots inside the garden) and I've had entire plants vanish, leaving a hole in the ground, from the nature strip and from inside the fence. The stamping was sheer nastiness and the disappearing acts theft. But it is hard to imagine what would motivate someone to rock up with secateurs and cut off a rose at the bud union. What bastardry.

People don't damage or break my roses in the front garden, but come Xmas, Valentine's day, easter and peoples birthdays, my front garden get raided as there are only rose bushes there...

Jeez there are some a***holes around the place.
Someone or perhaps more than one person has a nice heap of standard roses in there garden somewhere around here because each year there is more than one case of theft reported in our local Collie Mail.
Usually the front gardens that have been targeted belong to oldies , I guess they won't go outside at night to investigate even if they do hear something lest they get coshed .
It's caused a lot of grief too because the bushes have often been received as gifts or have been planted in memory of a deceased loved one . The other things that have been targeted are the solar garden lights and a couple of times things like bird baths or decorative pots or unusual ornaments
It all smacks of the work of a lightfingered gardener who knows the area and who to target . Then there are the other cases of sheer vandalism where plants have simply been pulled and trashed and or garden ornaments and gnomes smashed .

If you cover over the bud union of your BdN T with some peastraw or lucerne mulch or something similar to protect it from sunburn , you MAY just be lucky enough to have it re-shoot.

Good Luck.

There are some people who believe they can do what they want when they want. They don't realise the hurt they cause others.

Your anger is understandable Tamara. I've had that happen to me many times in my last garden. It makes you feel so helpless and disillusioned with some in your neighbourhood.

Hang in there!

How awlful people there are about. Let us now if it shoots again Tamara, I reckon it will. You should put all grafts below the ground, which will protect your roses much more.
