What is happening

Post by neptune on 4th November 2011, 23:24

Most of my bushes have three or four buds that look like the below...the buds either don't open or they don't open fully. The other buds that don't look like this, open to be beautiful flowers ......any ideas will be appreciated......

It has been suggested elsewhere that Thrips can cause this. Are thrip a problem in WA?

Not where I live....to be honest, I have never seen a thrip...the only thing I used to get are aphids and this year My roses were introduced to spider mites for the first time this year........

So now I will google for images of thrips and what they do .......thanks Simon...

You'll need good eyes to be able to spot John , they are minute ; your best chances of seeing them are on the white or very pale coloured flowers.

They are a warm weather pest here and come in on the east winds in summer . I don't normally start to notice them or their damage until about January. I haven't seen any here yet but it's been a fairly mild spring here [the roses are loving it and some of the blooms have been huge] but has it started to warm up , up your way ?

Would you like some beetles to keep your spider mites company ? Laughing [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

cheers. Rosalie

I always thought this was caused by plain old mundane damage to the bud as it was opening, so that only the "rim" was affected (effected?? Rolling Eyes ) and cant stretch out to open, whether by frost or sunburn or whatever... ??
