Hi from miss nomer

Post by miss nomer on 3rd October 2011, 12:01

Hi everyone, I'm Naomi and I have just joined the forum. I'm a fairly new to gardening as this is our first year in our own home in the Adelaide hills. So far I have 27 roses, mostly Austins. My husband thinks this is an extravagant amount but props go to to a lady at the nursery yesterday who overheard him complaining and said that wasn't very many!! But she did laugh when he said it is a lot when he is the one digging all the holes. He is not so interested in plants but he does do the heavy work if I plan it and organize him. He seems to be pleased with how we are transforming our yard. We started from scratch this year and so have a ways to go. I am currently enamored with roses with the cupped shaped blooms packed full of petals but am starting to appreciate all different kinds and would like to learn more about some of the old garden roses.
Hope to get to know you and enjoy your company, knowledge and your beautiful rose pics!

Thank you Barbara and David. We just have your average suburban block so not a lot of room but it is enough for us to look after. It would certainly be nice to have more land here where the land is so lush. But I struggle with my health and have a reasonably severe form of arthritis so I can't actually do everything I want to do in it myself. Can't even use a shovel atm I have had a bit of a relapse recently that's where my dear hubby is so good Digger and I can get the kids onto the weeds (for about half an hour before they mutiny).

Welcome Naomi,
I am so sorry that your health is not the best and you must be in so much pain, poor girl.
I am sure your hubby doesn't mind doing the labouring for you, I would call thet all part and parcel of love love I know I would be lost with out mine.
Kids - well that is a different matter, they soon get fed up with helping.

Take care and I know you will make some great friends here.

Hi Carole,
the way to get the kids onto the weeds is to pay them. When we bought our place in Warburton, the place was overrun with blackberries. We slashed them with a big old Mobilco "walk behind" mower, then paid the kids 1c per root they pulled out.
The kids were small and it was a long time ago. I think you'd need to up the ante a bit now. Very Happy
