Some of these species have the most amazing perfumes. Rosa bracteata, for example, has a perfume that some have descibed as that of nail polish remover and Rosa clinophylla, being closely related to bracteata also has that same fragrance. It's interesting to hear you mentiom banana smells from roses too. I make synthetic fragrances with the better kids at school. They are called esters. One of them can be described as nail polish remover and one can be described as a banana smell. A lot of plants sythesise similar kinds of compounds naturally too and esters are responsible for the aroma of many fruits (like rose hips). For example (young) wines get a lot of their aroma from esters and are the result of the fermentation of the fruit sugars. Maybe the laevigata hips are partly fermented causing them to release sweet odours similar to that of wines.

It's all very interesting!!!
