Soaring Spirits seedlings

Post by OzRose on 19th November 2010, 09:31

At the end of last summer I got a hip set on my young Soaring Spirits bush . This was by accident rather than design as I thought I had completely deadheaded all my bushes that were in pots .
It was a funny misshapen thing , one side looked like it had been scored by a thorn while it was developing and it was bent over.
More out of curiosity than anything else , I cut it open and got 6 seeds out of it which I bunged in a pot and promptly forgot about till they started germinating.
I lost one to ? slug / earwigs / snails and two damped off .

The remaining 3 are all very healthy and two have just flowered.
The first to flower is lemon and pink splotched/ striped with frilled petals , just like S.S but it might have a couple more petals . Will have another go at counting them tomorrow.

If anyone has Soaring Spirits flowering at the moment [mine is not] could they get me a petal count please ?

The other one is white , it has a couple of darker pink stripes on it's outer petals and seems it may be semi-double.
Alas for this little flower the plague of thrips that we are having has made a bit of a mess of it. What it does have is a pretty little frilled edge to the petals so I am looking forward to seeing a decent flower . Just have to keep the thrip at bay.[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
All three are nice bushy little plants at the moment ; if they are going to be climbers , when would they show signs ?

The other baby that has streaked ahead of it's siblings is baby Fabulous (1) ; while some seeds out of the same hip are just germinating now , this little'un has it's first flower on it.[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Love the white soaring spirit one with the ruffled edges, the bud white is looking good, any plans for it.

I never got to count the petals on mine before 'the incident' but I did manage to get a photo off to HMF before I killed it Embarassed

You can see it here: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Looks to be around 6-7 petals.

If a seedling is going to be a climber , when would you notice it showing such tendencies ? At the moment my S.S seedlings are nice rounded dumpy bushes . So far still very healthy like their parent is reputed to be.

ummm. How did you kill your Soaring Spirits plant Simon ?
[or shouldn't I ask ? Laughing ]

cheers. Rosalie
