  • Mixing and Matching

There are a lot of myths surrounding growing roses. One such myth is that roses can only be grown in beds with other roses. Today we know that roses do infact co-exist with other plants perfectly well and add something special to beds of perenials and can even be matched with Australian natives. In this forum you can discuss ways to use roses with your other favourite plants.

Myth Busted! Some myths are true.. others are not so true. This is the forum to discuss all those rules that we are all told when we first start out in roses. When discussing rose myths here it is important to back up what you claim if you are refuting or supporting a myth. Citing other credible references is a good way to do this.

  • Field of Dreams

    http://i63.servimg.com/u/f63/13/33/54/62/fodico11.png
A rose breeding friend of mine, Mr Jim Sproul, owner of Sproul Roses by Design, has a section of his website called 'The Field of Dreams'. The field of dreams is where all his seedlings that pass his rigorous selection criteria end up after graduating from the greenhouse for testing outdoors. I think it's a wonderful name and concept and describes how we all feel about the seedlings we are most proud of. Jim has bred many amazing roses and some have even made it to Australia. Most people would be familiar by now with 'Honey Dijon', a lovely mustardy coloured rose that has recently become available here. It is for his work on hybrid persica, however, that Jim will be most remembered for because his hulthemia varieties are some of the most beautiful in this new and exciting class. 'Honey Dijon' would have started its life in the field of dreams and from there made its way into commerce and into the global field of reality... something we all aspire to I'm sure. Jim is a wonderful, gently spoken, man and this forum is a tribute to an innovative gentleman and prolific rose breeder and an invitation to everyone to share their dream with the rest of the world. This is a virtual field of dreams where you can share with us the seedlings that are significant to you that represent a major achievement towards reaching your goals. You can see Jim's field of dreams at his website here Sproul Roses by Design. I look forward to seeing your photos and being here to witness your field of dreams grow.
