"Spanish Lady"...

Post by Damo on 16th February 2010, 3:31 pm

I have had this rose for a few years now but have discovered absolutely nothing about her. I am guessing she is a striped sport from an older HT. Does anyone know anything about this rose?

It doesn't appear to be an official name. Can you tell us a bit about it first? Like where you got it? Was this the label on it when you did? etc... just to trace it back a little... we might be able to do a bit of detective work.

G'day Simon,

It was bought from Trewallyn Nursery in QLD (in '04 or '05 I think) but I have lost the catalogue it featured in. There was not too much info about it in the catalogue just the name & a general description ("red with black stripes" I think it said). I have searched all of my books & online but found nothing & I wrote to the nursery but got no reply...

It is most definitely a HT & it has large healthy - but sparse - foliage.

Hmmmm that is about it...

I ran "Contains Spanish" past helpmefind, but it didn't come up with anything like your rose.

Yeah - I did that too... it's still listed on their online catalogue:

http://www.trewallyn.com.au/cgi-bin/store/agora.cgi?cartlink=static/rose_lists.htm

Go to S and find 'Spanish Lady' (tried linking straight to it and they have a strange way of naming their pages that the forum software can't handle.

Got this reply:

Dear Simon
The rose 'Spanish Lady' was given to my father - Neville Trebbin - (he started Trewallyn Nursery back in 1950) by a member of the Brisbane Rose Society 30 years ago. It first appeared in the catalogue in 1982. The details on the breeding have been lost over the years. It could have been a sport from another rose in their garden.

Allan Trebbin

Thanks again for doing that Simon (& of course thanks to Allan for the reply). Thumbsup

Regardless of her mystery (& maybe even because of it) I would be sad not to have her. It is nice to know a few things about this really interesting (IMO) & eyecatching rose...
