I have a climbing trellis as part of a rose bed, with Noisettes and Alister Clarks, but would love some yellow of the same type.

Recently I visited the Rumsey Rose Garden in Parramatta Park and was very disappointed with the care of these

plants. Unfortunatly quite a few have died and all that remains is the signage or an open space.

The council cuts the grass regularly but a lot of plants were struggling in our 35 to 40C heat and lack of water. The best performers were the Tea's that were blooming well. The roses consisted mainly of species and old garden roses so to see it at it's best October to November would ...

Just found this recipe while surfing http://www.countrygardener.com.au (lovely site pity they are closed for the moment and dont send to Tasmania)

Spraying your Roses

What you need:

1 x 4ltr Sprayer

4 x teaspoons bi-carb soda

4 x Litres tempid water

20mls x Pest Oil or Eco Oil

This all round organic spray is great for treating both black spot and powdery mildew on roses. It works by changing the pH of the leaf surface, killing the current fungal disease and preventing new spores ...

Well... pretty much finished... just have to paint it, level it, and plant a climbing rose or two against it. Leaning towards 'New Dawn' at the moment. Alicia, my partner for whom the seat was built as a Christmas gift this year, wants a repeat flowering large flowered light pink rose and 'New Dawn' seems to fit the bill nicely and it is almost thornless making it even more 'sensible' for a rose seat I think. Either that or I will get another two 'Nahema' which is doing well here already. Also ...

Still doing the odd late cross here but, as my first season as a hybridizer comes to a close, I am pleased that 85 crosses (and loads of OP hips) are still hanging on. Most are still in the 40-70 day range but quite a few are close to 100 days now & everything looks very promising! About 30 crosses have completely failed so far & they seemed to do so in the 3rd & 4th week after pollination took place. I wonder if others have noticed this time frame too?

A few weeks back I bought "Litl' Romeo" [JACmouse] aka. "Disneyland Rose" on a whim because it has really nice foliage (large & glossy but paper-thin IYKWIM?). I knew nothing about this rose at all & it came with no picture on the tag so when I got home I researched it & have been waiting patiently for it's buds to open.
I am just starting on my second watering since Christmas Day. Pretty good, hey ? My Ramblers have thought it was Spring again. Actually, they didn't bloomed in Spring hardly because of the dryness. The Alberic Barbier is blooming really for the first time and is so pretty. Well it might have bloomed a little bit before but the blooms weren't much, but they are now !

The grass has gone crazy and I am working at getting that under control.

I enjoyed browsing this forum so I might as well join you

My favourite roses are those of old fashioned looks, and specially the nicely scented ones. Since 2004 I have been growing roses from seed. I did some hybridizing, however most seedlings are op.

We have winter here and it has been very cold. Fortunately we had also a lot of snow; so no rose activities just now.

Wait and see how the roses survived. Some of my seedlings are in pots and ...

It wasn't where I thought it was... it was about three properties further along the road. The bloke had been on his tractor slashing a paddock of tall dry dead grass and hit something making sparks.
Some intersting points have been raised in another section of this forum that I would like to explore further. Following is my thoughts on the whole thing... they are fairly random...

Lots of people around the world have looked at the problem of growing roses for warm climates and have approached it in different ways. Many have taken the line of using hybrid tea roses that seem to do well in warm climates (such as Mr Lincoln) and crossing them with species roses from warm climates such as ...

I've been trying a number of different potting mixes this year with cuttings and seedlings and am pretty unhappy with the lot of them... too much woody material in all of them so far (bags ranging from the cheapie ones right up to nearly $20 a bag). Best mix I've used (not for roses) is the AmGrow native plant mix for my correa cuttings and banksia seedlings. My soil around here is red dirt... Really fertile (they say you could grow a baby in it) and based on clay but really well drained... I'm ...

This is an embryo that I excised from the seed of an open pollinated 'Altissimo' seed. I'm just practicing still (hence using OP seeds to practice on) but basically if you remove the embryo and place it in a ziplock plastic bag on a few sheets of moist paper towel it will germinate in just a few days. I did this one on Thursday night, straight from the and old hip in the garden, and you can already see the radicle starting to emerge from the embryo. You sit it in a warm light place out ...

It gets minimal BS here (certainly much less than many other better known overseas-bred roses that I have), repeats quickly & never fails to get lots of attention from visitors.

Could you Simon or anyone else point me to some articles that explain the basics of ploidy levels in simple terms? and explain how this effects breeding? Ive been trying to dredge up old school biology knowledge out of my head..

So I had a small bag of 100 OP 'Westerland' seeds and I decided I wanted to experiment a little with them. The idea behind it was to see if the outer layer of the rose seed could be digested and remove the need to cold stratify the seeds... greatly reducing the time needed to bring about successive generations...

'Climbing Cecile Brunner' x 'Safrano' - FAILED

'Christopher Marlowe' x 'Safrano' - FAILED

'Scabrosa' x Rosa multiflora - FAILED

Most roses haven't yet started flowering fully here so things will speed up a little towards the end of November. I'm going ...
